Surgical Preparation
The animal is anesthetized. Sterile eye lubricant is placed in both eyes, and the scrotum is surgically prepared. The animal is placed in dorsal recumbency on a surgery board fitted with a sterile board drape. Analgesic is administered.
Surgical Description
To expose the testis, a skin incision is made to the midline of the scrotum along the septum. The right (or left) testis is exposed via an incision made to the tunica vaginalis membrane surrounding it. Suture is tied tightly to permanently ligate the vessels supplying blood flow to the testis. Once the suture is in place, the testis is cut away from the connecting tissue. The remaining tissue is returned to its natural position, and the procedure is repeated on the remaining testis.
Surgical Closing
The scrotal incisions are closed with approved closing materials (suture or stainless steel clips), and the surgery sites are treated with an approved disinfectant followed by an alcohol swabbing.
Sham
A standard sham castration model is prepared as described above with regards to surgical site preparation, scrotum dissection, closing, and surgical site disinfection; however, no tissue is removed.
